The pair live by the carefree, worry-free philosophy of "Hakuna Matata". They initially rose to fame for rescuing an orphaned Simba and raising him in the jungle. Beyond their integral role in The Lion King films, they starred in their own self-titled spin-off animated television series. The 2004 film The Lion King 1½ offers a deeper backstory into how the duo met. Both were outcasts; Timon left his meerkat colony after an embarrassing failure, and Pumbaa was a lonely exile due to his smell. After encountering one another, they bonded over their shared status as outsiders, teamed up, and eventually adopted the "Hakuna Matata" lifestyle before stumbling upon Simba.
