HISTORY & CONTEXT Borrowing the sun god's credibility Sol turns up a lot on Gordian Ill's gold coinage, and it's not hard to see why - he came to the throne as a young teenager after a chaotic run of short-lived emperors, and tying himself to the sun god was a fast way to project stability he otherwise didn't really have at that age.
