The story follows Kale Allerion, a fourteen-year-old former slave who discovers she has the unique ability to sense dragon eggs. Freed from servitude, Kale is directed to the city of Vendela to train for service under Paladin, the earthly representative of the deity Wulder. However, her journey takes an unexpected turn when she encounters a group of Paladin's servants who redirect her mission: to recover a stolen meech dragon egg from the malevolent Wizard Risto.
