Product Details

Notes: The Carnutes were a powerful Celtic tribe in central Gaul, centered around modern-day Chartres and Orléans, whose territory served as the spiritual heart of the Gallic nations and the annual meeting place for the Druids. Though they initially maintained a shaky alliance with Rome, they famously sparked the great rebellion of 52 BC by massacring Roman citizens at Cenabum, leading to a brutal retaliatory campaign by Julius Caesar. Despite their eventual defeat and the destruction of their capital, they retained a degree of self-governance under the Empire, and their legacy survives today in the name of the city of Chartres.
