Joseph Campbell (1904–1987) was an American author and teacher best known for his work with comparative mythology. His first full-length solo book, The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), earned the National Institute of Arts and Letters Award for Contributions to Creative Literature. He studied the myth of the archetypal hero and discussed the universal pattern of a “monomyth” (a word he borrows from James Joyce); the essence of, and common to, heroic tales in every culture. Campbell explores and outlines the basic stages of the mythic cycle of the hero’s journey, and common variations. The Hero with a Thousand Faces has influenced many creative artists, including director George Lucas. He famously called mythologist Joseph Campbell his "Yoda". After realizing his early drafts of Star Wars naturally mirrored classical myth structures, Lucas credited Campbell as his primary influence. [Joseph Campbell Foundation]
