Last summer I invested $17,500—six months’ salary and all my savings—into ornamental gourd futures, hoping to corner the market like Vincent Kosuga did with onions. Forecasts predicted a poor harvest due to bad soil in central Mexico and a warm spring. Prices soared at Halloween, but on Nov 12 the bubble burst. COVID killed Thanksgiving demand, crushing prices. I thought I’d be fine until Dec 2, when I learned a massive Argentine shipment—due in March—had arrived early. I planned to sell before it hit, but these gourds were giants, some 4 lbs each, sending prices to 6¢/lb.
