Lake Superior agates are a type of agate found near Lake Superior, known for their rich red, orange, and yellow banding, caused by iron oxidation. These gemstones formed within basaltic lava flows about 1.1 billion years ago and were later dispersed by glacial activity. They are the official state gemstone of Minnesota.
