Spawn #1, published by Image Comics in May 1992 and created by Todd McFarlane, is a landmark modern-age comic that introduced Al Simmons, a murdered government assassin who returns to Earth as a Hellspawn. 1st appearance of Spawn Key Plot Points of Spawn #1 The Return: Five years after being killed by his own CIA partner (Chapel), Al Simmons returns to Earth in a daze in a New York City alley, now inhabiting a disfigured, charred body. The Betrayal: Upon returning, Spawn discovers that five years have passed and Wanda has moved on, now married to his best friend, Terry Fitzgerald, and with a daughter named Cyan.
