In 1883 the US minted 2 coins almost identical. One worth 5 cents (Clad) and the other worth 5 dollars (Gold). Since the coins were identical in design, con artist Josh Tatum, plated the 5 cents coins in 24k gold, making them exactly like the 5 dollar Gold coins. Tatum made approximately $15,000, before being caught, which prompted the US to mint the word cents on the clad version. Changing the coin design for the next 30 years.
