Octagonal trays, particularly those made of wood and decorated with lacquer, have a long history in East Asian decorative arts. These items were often used for serving food, displaying offerings, or as decorative pieces in homes and temples. The intricate painted scenes frequently depicted mythological stories, historical events, or scenes from daily life, reflecting cultural values and artistic traditions. Chinese lacquerware, in particular, is renowned for its durability and aesthetic beauty, with techniques dating back thousands of years. The use of red and black lacquers, often combined with gold or other pigments, created visually striking and luxurious objects. Such trays were highly prized and often commissioned for imperial use or as gifts for nobility, showcasing the skill of the artisans.
