What makes these specimens special is that they are actually melanite (black) garnet at their core! As the amount of aluminum in the environment decreased, and the amount of manganese increased, the same garnet crystal started growing pink layers of a different variety. These also feature a bed of white wollastonite, and glow light orange under UV light. ABOUT The Sierra de Cruces in Coahuila is a well-known Mexican mineral locality that has produced exceptional pink Grossular garnets, commonly referred to by collectors as "Raspberry" Garnets because of their distinctive color. These garnets formed through contact metamorphism, where heat and mineral-rich fluids altered the surrounding limestone to create beautifully crystallized specimens. Material from this locality is highly sought after for its vivid coloration, sharp crystal development, and limited availability, making it a favorite among garnet collectors.
