An exceptionally scarce 1895 Bibliophile Edition of Victor Hugo – Fiction: The Gallery of Illustrations, published by George Barrie & Son, Philadelphia. This is one of only 100 Bibliophile Edition sets produced, making it a notably limited late-19th-century Victor Hugo publication. The collection originally comprises 70 illustrations, each represented in two colors—black and sepia. Half of the prints are on Imperial Japan paper, a premium paper highly prized in fine press and bibliophile publishing for its smooth surface, strength, and ability to capture exceptionally fine detail. Its use was typically reserved for deluxe editions and special impressions, making these prints an important feature of this already limited Bibliophile Edition. The black and sepia impressions are individually presented on loose sheets, many protected by tissue guards, and housed within the original-style portfolio with marbled interior panels. All of the Imperial Japan Prints are tipped-in. This set is not complete. Ten sepia prints are missing: Nos. 1, 14, 31, 33, 37, 46, 47, 59, 63, and 67. The portfolio shows substantial age-related wear, particularly around the edges and exterior, while the plates themselves should be evaluated individually from the photographs.
