The story unfolds on a lush, unnamed planet entirely enveloped by a towering, multi-layered rainforest. The indigenous human inhabitants, descendants of a long-ago spacefaring mishap, have adapted to live harmoniously within the forest's third stratum, avoiding the perilous ground and canopy levels. Each person shares a symbiotic bond with a native creature known as a furcot, fostering a deep connection to their environment. The narrative centers on Born, a member of this society, who encounters two off-world explorers from an Earth-based corporation aiming to exploit the planet's unique resources. As Born guides them through the forest's myriad dangers, he becomes increasingly aware of the existential threat these outsiders pose to his world's delicate ecological balance.
