Valentinian II, AV Solidus Struck 377-380 AD. Trier mint. 4.42g. Obv: DN VALENTINIANVS IVN P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right. Rev: VICTOR-IA AVGG, Theodosius and Valentinian seated, holding globe; Victory behind, wings spread. RIC IX 49c; Depeyrot 47/3. HISTORY & CONTEXT A four-year-old's name on the gold Valentinian Il became emperor at just four years old, so a coin like this - showing him seated alongside the far more senior Theodosius -- says a lot about how little real power he held early on. Actual authority sat with whichever general or relative happened to be running things in his name at the time.
