The classic majolica butter pat: a single green grape leaf with its curling tendril pressed into a round of speckled mustard ground. Mixes into any green tablescape and makes a very good spoon rest. | SPECS: Approx 3.5 in diameter, moulded earthenware with green and mustard lead glazes, unglazed foot ring. Unmarked; origin and date left open. | HISTORY: The grape leaf on a stippled ground was made by half the majolica potteries on both sides of the Atlantic in the 1870s and 1880s, and this is the small butter pat size. Unmarked, so it stays unattributed. | CONDITION: Light crazing, a few tiny glaze pops in the mustard ground from manufacture, minor wear to the foot. No chips or cracks seen; tap test pending.
