Offered here is an interesting vintage Wittnauer Professional Chronograph, reference 235T / 6002/5, dating to the 1960s. The 235T is notable for its connection to NASA's early wristwatch qualification program during the Gemini and Apollo era. During this period, NASA evaluated chronographs for use by astronauts as the American space program progressed toward the Apollo lunar missions. Project Gemini served as an important bridge between Mercury and Apollo, developing and testing many of the techniques and procedures that would later be required for the Moon missions. For many years, the Wittnauer reference 242T was believed to have been the model submitted by Longines-Wittnauer for NASA's wristwatch qualification trials. Later research into NASA documentation identified the 235T as the model actually submitted for testing. It was evaluated alongside chronographs from Omega and Rolex, with the Omega Speedmaster ultimately passing NASA's qualification tests. This manual-wind wristwatch is powered by the Valjoux 72 mechanical chronograph movement with 17 jewels. It features central chronograph seconds, a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock, a 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, and small seconds at 9 o’clock. The movement operates at 18,000 vibrations per hour and offers an approximate 48-hour power reserve. Swiss made. Housed in a 36mm round stainless steel case with a smooth fixed bezel and classic round chronograph pushers. The silver-tone dial features applied Arabic numeral hour markers, matching hands, and a classic three-register chronograph layout. The outer portion of the dial features contrasting blue and red scales, including a tachymeter scale marked “Base 1000” and a red telemeter scale marked “Base 10 Miles.” The watch is fitted with a stainless steel bracelet.
