A 17.5 inch flow blue meat platter with a deep cobalt scale-and-flower border that bleeds into the white, gilt tracing on the blossoms and scrolls, moulded rococo shells at the ends and a lacy inner band around the well. The kind of platter that anchors a whole flow blue wall. | SPECS: Approx 17.5 in x 13 in oval. Maker: confirm, factory mark blurred, US patent stamp dated October 1897, made c.1897-1910. Pattern: flow blue scale border with gilt flowers, unnamed. | HISTORY: The little gold patent stamp on the reverse is a US registration for the gilt decoration, added to English flow blue exported to America in the late 1890s when gold tracing over the blue was the height of dining-room fashion. Platters this size were the centre of the Sunday table and survive in far smaller numbers than plates. | CONDITION: Gilt worn across the border, light utensil wear in the well, a small brown stain spot and a stray gilt streak on the reverse, minor roughness to the moulded rim.
