Dated to the day. A tiny deep mulberry-black transferware dish with a Rhineland castle and towers at the well, a fringe of leaves, and a dense damask border of floral diamonds and scrolls, all under the warmest toasty crazing you could ask for. The registry diamond on the base pins the design to May 1849. | SPECS: Approx 4.75 in diameter, twelve-sided rim. Maker: unmarked Staffordshire, design registered 24 May 1849, made c.1849-1850s. Pattern: castle and tower scene, unnamed. | HISTORY: The diamond registry mark was the Victorian design patent: potters registered a new pattern with the Board of Trade to stop rivals copying it for three years, and the letters and numbers in the lozenge spell out the exact date.
