Folk art carvings of coastal birds, particularly pelicans, have long been a staple of seaside artisan craft traditions throughout North America. Craftsmen often utilized locally sourced scrap wood, driftwood branches, and basic hand tools to create charming, rustic representations of local fauna for the tourist and coastal home decor markets. These sculptures highlight a spontaneous approach to carving and painting, where the natural imperfections of the wood enhance the rustic coastal aesthetic. During the latter half of the twentieth century, roadside gift shops and coastal art cooperatives frequently offered these decorative wooden birds to vacationers seeking souvenirs. The detailed cross-hatching and expressive painting styles reflect traditional folk art techniques passed down through generations of coastal woodworkers. Such decorative items remain popular today among collectors of nautical and maritime folk art decor.
