Beautiful 19th-century cased tintype photograph featuring a seated woman in a patterned period dress. The portrait is housed behind an elaborate embossed gilt/brass mat with decorative corner flourishes and surrounded by a muted rose-colored velvet border. The original-style hinged case features an ornate embossed black exterior and a rich red velvet interior panel. A wonderful surviving piece of early photography and Victorian material culture. The photograph has the characteristic dark metallic surface of a tintype/ferrotype and shows age-related surface wear and oxidation. The case has considerable wear from age, including losses and rubbing to the exterior covering, edge and corner wear, and general deterioration around the hinge/case structure. Interior textiles and metal components also show age-related wear. Please review all photographs carefully for condition.
