Belle Isle Park is a 985-acre island park located in the Detroit River near downtown Detroit. Belle Isle provides views of Detroit to the North and Canada to the South. It is home to the James Scott Memorial Fountain, the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory (photo) and the Belle Isle Aquarium. Belle Isle formally became a state park on February 10, 2014. It was originally called Hog Island by French settlers; renamed Belle Isle in 1845. American urban park designer, Frederick Law Olmsted, was commissioned for Belle Isle work in the 1880s; he is known for his design of Central Park in NYC. Both the conservatory and the adjacent aquarium were designed by Detroit architect Albert Kahn.
