Laguna Agate 1/2 Nodule with a fortification outer band and quartz floater center, and druzy crystal pocket. Outside is original host rock. Video available. Stone Dimensions. 1-1/8" Wide x 2" Long x 7/8" Thick. Thank you for looking. Laguna Agate comes from a specific, remote mountainous region in Chihuahua, Mexico, near the town of Estación Ojo Laguna, about 150 miles south of the U.S. border. It's a highly prized banded agate known for its brilliant reds, oranges, and whites, found in numerous hand-mined claims in the volcanic terrain. Laguna agate is a vibrant, banded form of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) that forms from silica-rich water filling cavities in volcanic rock, with distinct colors from trace minerals like iron creating its famous reds, oranges, and whites. Mined in Chihuahua, Mexico, it's prized for intricate, layered patterns built up over millions of years in volcanic ash deposits, making it a stunning natural art piece. How it Forms Cavities: Gas bubbles in cooling lava create hollow spaces (vugs) in volcanic rock. Silica-Rich Water: Groundwater, rich in dissolved silica, seeps into these cavities. Layered Deposition: The silica precipitates slowly, forming microscopic quartz layers (chalcedony). Coloration: As layers build, impurities like iron, manganese, and chromium get trapped, creating distinct bands of red, orange, pink, yellow, and white. Key Characteristics Composition: Cryptocrystalline quartz (chalcedony). Origin: Volcanic rocks in Chihuahua, Mexico. Appearance: Intricate, lace-like banding with vivid colors. Hardness: Around 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, making it durable.
