The core argument of the book centers on the cultural and political withdrawal of modern Protestant evangelicalism. North contends that prevalent eschatological frameworks—specifically pre-millennialism and amillennialism—foster a pessimistic worldview regarding human history. Because these views teach that societal decay is inevitable before the Second Coming, they discourage Christians from actively developing comprehensive, independent social or political theories. As a result, North argues, the church has inadvertently conceded public ethics, law, and social institutions over to secular humanism.
