Set in 1482 Paris, the novel follows Quasimodo, a deaf, deformed bell-ringer for Notre Dame Cathedral. He is consumed by his love for La Esmerelda, a Roma dancer whom the archdeacon Claude Frollo also obsessively desires. Following a series of tragic, manipulative betrayals, La Esmerelda is executed, leading Quasimodo to his death.
