Exceptional antique double brooch cloak/cape clasp with substantial connecting chains and dramatic Heraldic motifs. Elaborate imagery includes a crowned shield, winged griffin/eagle, sweeping blade and sculptural scrollwork. During the Victorian Historicist movement, such heraldic imagery evoked chivalry, nobility, lineage, strength, vigilance and protection, reflecting the era’s fascination with an idealized Medieval/Renaissance past. Early straight drop-in pin/C-catch construction supports a c.1890–1910 date. Attributed Continental European, possibly German/Austrian; origin unconfirmed. Metal composition intentionally unspecified. Beautiful aged patina and wear consistent with age.
