Complete three-volume set of The Human Comedy by Honoré de Balzac, presenting selections from his monumental La Comédie Humaine. The set was published in New York by Peter Fenelon Collier and is copyright 1893. These volumes collect a wide range of Balzac’s interconnected stories and novels portraying French society, private life, ambition, wealth, family relationships, politics, and social class. The edition includes an introduction by Julius Chambers and is illustrated with engravings on wood from French editions. All three volumes retain their matching brown cloth bindings with decorative blind-stamped designs and gilt The Human Comedy – Honoré de Balzac lettering on the front boards and spines. Condition: Antique set with significant age-related wear. Covers show rubbing, discoloration, staining, spotting, fading, edge and corner wear, and loss to portions of the gilt decoration. One volume has severe damage along the spine, with a large section of the exterior spine covering missing and the underlying binding material exposed, as clearly shown in the photographs. The other volumes also show spine and exterior wear. Interior pages display toning, scattered foxing/spotting, staining and other signs of age.
