Pyrography, the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks, has a long tradition in Eastern Europe and Russia. Artisans traditionally used heated metal pokers or specialized tips to meticulously hand-burn intricate designs onto turned wooden blanks. Nesting dolls, originating in Russia in the late 19th century, traditionally featured peasant girls or folk tales, but modern variations often celebrate cultural heritage, historical figures, or traditional Jewish life scenes. Unpainted wood finishes became particularly popular among crafters and folk art collectors seeking a more organic and tactile aesthetic compared to brightly lacquered souvenirs.
