ORIGINAL 1990 BOWMAN PAINTING SET BREAK Up for bid here is an original acrylic on canvas painting commissioned by Topps for the 1990 Bowman Sweepstakes insert cards. Each was hand painted by artist Craig Pursley on a 12” by 16” canvas, wrapped on a stretcher bar. Topps later removed the stretcher and stored the canvases flat, smartly protecting each painting face while in storage. Topps wrote the player name at the bottom of each, and nearly all will have 2.5 x 3.5 standard card size black and white versions of the image shown as production test samples, attached delicately with 35 year old masking tape. The paintings are all beautiful preserved and would stand as an iconic piece in any sports card collection, ideally displayed when framed and matted or can be re-stretched on a frame backing. The pieces are meticulous when viewed in person. You will absolutely love it. Some History on the 1990 Bowman Art Set, along with notes from the Artist: The subjects include each of the prior year Rookies of the Year (Jerome Walton, Gregg Olson), MVPs (Kevin Mitchell, Robin Yount), and Cy Youngs (Mark Davis, Bret Saberhagen) along with 5 Popular Star Players selected by Topps (Nolan Ryan, Will Clark, Don Mattingly, Bo Jackson, Dwight Gooden - all great choices!). Each is as unique of a 1 of 1 piece as you will ever find. I reached out to the artist recently and had a wonderful conversation. He affirmed these were all very much his original paintings. Craig worked as an illustrator at the time for the California Angels and pitched the idea to Topps circa 1989, as it was just following the 40 year anniversary of the early painted subject Bowman Miniature sets of the late 1940's that he loved. We had a wonderful conversation and he filled in some fascinating history on how this set came to be, along with some of his other sports-related artwork performed throughout his career.
