Authentic late-Victorian black velveteen capelet dating to the 1890s and decorated with elaborate jet-style black beadwork. Features a fitted shoulder silhouette, high embellished collar, beaded fringe and lined interior. Approximately 17 inches shoulder to shoulder and 12–19 inches long. Documented provenance from the M. Estella Sprague Costume Collection. Fair antique condition. There is bead loss, especially around the collar, active age-related bead deterioration commonly called “bead disease,” and several splits in the lining. Additional loose or fragile beads may be present. This approximately 130-year-old garment should be handled carefully and stored in a dry environment. Best suited for a historical clothing collection, Gothic display, museum textile archive or costume study. Wearability is not guaranteed.
