1992 THE GREATEST CHALLENGE IN PATCHWORK is precision in piecing -- as little as 1/16" variation in a single seam can affect the whole quilt. Now you can achieve absolute accuracy using the foundation method. For those new to this method, foundation piecing utilizes an additional fabric layer as a base to stabilize the piecing and define the pattern. This base is completely covered by the pieces and can range in size from a patch or segment to a block or even an entire quilt. It can be permanent or temporary and can be made from a variety of materials, from paper to cloth. Working on a foundation makes it easy to achieve precision and can be a valuable design tool. Precision-Pieced Quilts Using the Foundation Method explores proven techniques for piecing that a quilter at any level of skill can use. It gives quilters the opportunity to extend the boundaries in their own ways. Easy-to-follow, step-by-step directions are included for piecing five blocks and ten small quilts with both traditional and innovative patterns, like log cabin, crazy quilt, and Mariner's Compass. Materials and techniques are generously illustrated with black-and-white photos, diagrams, templates, and a handsome color gallery of 36 award-winning quilts. Jane Hall has been teaching quiltmaking since 1976 and is active in the Teacher Certification Program of the National Quilt Association. Dixie Haywood is also a teacher; she is the author of three quilting books and her articles and designs appear regularly in national magazines.
