Four books that give kids the version of history textbooks skip, told by the people who lived it: 🏜️ Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston & James D. Houston — 2 COPIES. The true memoir of a seven-year-old girl and her family imprisoned in a Japanese American internment camp during WWII. A standard on middle and high school reading lists. 🕊️ Sadako by Eleanor Coerr, illustrated by Ed Young — The true story of Sadako Sasaki, the girl who folded paper cranes in Hiroshima after the atomic bomb. Ed Young's pastel illustrations are stunning. Shorter and gentler than the chapter-book version — good for younger readers or a read-aloud. 🌊 Morning Girl by Michael Dorris — Winner of the Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction. A Taino brother and sister on a Bahamian island in 1492 — and the last page is Columbus's arrival, from their side of the water. Two copies of Manzanar means a parent and kid can read it together, or two students in the same co-op. Ages 9–14 · Historical Fiction
