The PEZ dispenser was originally invented in Austria in 1927 by Eduard Haas III as a breath mint for smokers, designed to resemble a cigarette lighter. It was not until the early 1950s, following the introduction of fruit flavors and character heads, that the company shifted its focus toward the American children's toy and candy market. These interactive mechanical dispensers quickly became a canvas for popular culture icons, holiday figures, and licensed characters. Seasonal releases, particularly for Halloween, have been a staple of the PEZ product line since the late 20th century, featuring ghosts, witches, pumpkins, and vampires. Special variations such as glow-in-the-dark plastics were introduced to enhance the festive appeal for collectors and trick-or-treaters alike. Mass-produced by the millions in factories around the globe, these blister-packed holiday editions remain an affordable and nostalgic entry point for modern candy and toy collectors.
