An Irish river, imagined from Staffordshire. Pink transferware plate in the Shannon pattern: a classical villa on a lake, a boatman, an urn on a plinth and a balustraded terrace, framed by a wonderful panelled border of little castle views alternating with flower sprays between brick piers, and a scrolled edge. Twelve-sided rim. | SPECS: Approx 9.25 in diameter, twelve-sided rim. Maker: unmarked Staffordshire, c.1840s-1860s by style. Pattern: Shannon, printed on the base in a scrolled banner with an urn cartouche. | HISTORY: Romantic-era potters loved a place name, and Shannon gave a generic Italianate lake view a touch of Irish poetry for the export trade. The panelled border with alternating landscape and floral reserves is a classic 1840s device that lets a plate carry a dozen tiny pictures at once. Pink is the rarer romantic colourway. | CONDITION: Fine all-over crazing front and back, a few small brown specks in the well, light rim wear, faint toning at the rim on the reverse. No
