I hadn’t meant to take it. It just ended up in my bag after the strangest gas station stop of my life—somewhere off I-80, where the cashier wore a Shrek t-shirt and insisted I take a free hot dog “for the road.” I didn’t. I took the chicken instead.
Now it was here, vibrating and clucking slightly every time I hit a pothole, judging me like a silent co-pilot.
The radio crackled between stations before landing on some late-night talk show about a rise in bacteria in supermarket freezers. Fitting.
I glanced at the chicken. “Don’t look at me like that,” I muttered.
It said nothing.
But somehow, I knew it understood.
