Product Details

Notes: The coded series of Antoniniani refers to a unique coinage issue from the mint at Siscia around 289–290 AD. This series used Greek letters to attribute specific coins to either Diocletian or Maximianus, who were the two senior emperors of the Tetrarchy. The code: Each workshop also added one-third of the appropriate Greek name for the Augusti's corresponding deity. Diocletian (Jovian): Coins struck for him had a code referencing Jupiter, spelled in Greek as IO-VI-ANOS Maximianus (Herculian): Coins struck for him used a code referencing Hercules, spelled in Greek as HR-KOU-LI. The coded letters help differentiate between coins that might otherwise appear similar. The coin images and propaganda reflect the imperial strategy of legitimizing the Tetrarchy's rule through divine association. Coin type: Roman Imperial Ruler: Maximianus (Augustus) Coin: Bronze Antoninianus Obverse: IMP C M A VAL MAXIMIANVS P AVG - Radiate and cuirassed bust right Reverse: CONSERVATOR AVGG - Maximianus, holding long scepter, and Hercules, leaning on club, facing each other, sacrificing over altar Exergue: XXIHP Mint: Siscia (289 AD) Wt./Size/Axis: 3.24g / 22mm / 12H Rarity: Very Rare References: RIC V 581 (Bust) A66008
