This is a 5-cent United States postage stamp from the 1898 Trans-Mississippi Exposition issue, known as the "Fremont on Rocky Mountains" stamp (Scott #288). The stamp depicts explorer John C. Frémont raising an American flag on what he believed to be the highest peak of the Rocky Mountains. It was originally intended to be the 8-cent stamp in the series but was changed to 5 cents. The stamp is printed in a dull blue color. The image is based on an old woodcut engraving and the reports and maps from Frémont's expeditions guided many pioneers heading
