This is an authentic vintage black-and-white glass lantern slide (3.25" x 4") produced by the Beseler Lantern Slide Co. It depicts the famous Archaic Bronze Statuette of a Horse from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Subject: The statuette shown was acquired by The Met in 1923 and was once considered the "most important single object" in their Classical collection. It became the center of a world-famous art controversy in the 1960s regarding its authenticity, though it was eventually vindicated as an ancient masterpiece. ​The Slide: Based on the Beseler address (131 E 23rd St, a building completed in 1925), this slide likely dates from the late 1920s to the 1940s. It was used in university lectures or museum presentations before the era of 35mm film. The glass appears clear with strong contrast.
