Benz calcite from Daye County, Hubei Province, China is a distinctive and relatively recently popularized trade name for semi‑translucent calcite (CaCO₃) crystals from that region’s hydrothermal deposits. While not a formal mineralogical species, this material is prized by collectors for its large, gemmy calcite crystals that often exhibit clean, bladed or rhombohedral forms and can be partially coated or dusted with bright metallic pyrite and/or chalcopyrite, creating striking visual contrast and occasional star‑like patterns at crystal terminations. The “Benz” nickname comes from the occasional appearance of a three‑pointed metallic arrangement on the calcite terminations that resembles the Mercedes‑Benz logo, but beyond this memorable trade label the specimens are valued for their clarity, luster, and the unusual combination of smoky to colorless calcite with metallic highlights.
