Product Details

Obverse (Front): The front features a center portrait of George Washington, based on a painting by Gilbert Stuart. It has a distinctive blue Treasury seal and blue serial numbers. Text on the front includes the statement, "THIS CERTIFIES THAT THERE HAS BEEN DEPOSITED IN THE TREASURY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ONE SILVER DOLLAR PAYABLE TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND". Reverse (Back): The back has an ornate design with the words "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" across the top and a large "ONE" at the center. Historical Context: This was the last large-size $1 bill issued by the U.S. government before the size was standardized in 1928. When issued, each certificate was backed by an actual silver dollar in the U.S. Treasury, and the bearer could exchange the note for the physical silver on demand.
