This rare Boyd “Teddy the Tugboat” was produced during Boyd Glass’s First Five-Year Run in the elusive Sunburst Slag cadmium glass, one of the earliest and most desirable glass formulas ever used by Boyd. In normal light, the glass displays rich marbled tones of amber, honey, and warm red, flowing together in a dramatic slag pattern. Under ultraviolet light, the entire tugboat reveals a powerful golden cadmium glow, confirming that this is true cadmium glass, not applied paint or surface decoration. Sunburst Slag was used only briefly in Boyd’s earliest years and was rarely applied to novelty molds like Teddy the Tugboat. Later runs used different color recipes, making First Five-Year Sunburst examples exceptionally scarce today. Teddy the Tugboat is one of Boyd’s most iconic novelty molds, and examples made in early cadmium slag glass are considered among the most collectible Boyd novelties ever produced.
