This note is part of the short-lived “web press” printing experiment used by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in the early–mid 1990s. Instead of printing sheets of notes, these were printed on a continuous roll of paper (a “web”), similar to a newspaper press. Because the web press did not include the normal plate position indicators found on sheet-fed notes, collectors can identify these by the absence of face plate numbers and the special back plate number placement. The experiment was discontinued after a short time due to mechanical issues, making these notes a popular modern variety among currency collectors. Web notes were printed only in limited runs for certain districts and series, which adds to their collectibility.
