Haworthia Limifolia For bare root succulent imports, the care process differs significantly from traditional plants, as succulents are highly susceptible to rot if given too much water too soon. 1. Inspection and Air Drying Check for Rot: Immediately inspect the stem and roots for dark, mushy spots. If found, trim them with a sterile blade and let the wound "callous" for 2–3 days. Skip the Soak: Unlike other plants, do not soak succulent roots in water upon arrival. They need to stay dry to prevent fungal infections triggered by shipping stress. 2. Potting and Substrate Gritty Mix: Use a highly porous medium (at least 50–70% inorganic material like pumice, perlite, or Bonsai Jack's Succulent & Cactus Soil). Dry Potting: Plant the succulent in completely dry soil. Do not water it immediately after potting. 3. Acclimation for Imports The "Wait to Water" Rule: Wait 5–7 days before the first light watering. This allows any micro-tears in the roots from shipping or planting to heal. Low Humidity: Succulents prefer dry air. Ensure good airflow and avoid humidity domes or misters, which can cause crown rot. Gradual Light Exposure: Start with bright, indirect light. Imported succulents are often kept in dark boxes for days and will sunburn easily. Slowly move them toward LED grow lights or morning sun over 2 weeks. 4. Signs of Recovery Wrinkled Leaves: It is normal for lower leaves to wrinkle or be "absorbed" as the plant uses its energy to grow new roots. Stability Check: After 2–3 weeks, gently tug the plant. If you feel resistance, new roots have formed, and you can begin a regular "soak and dry" watering schedule. Important Note: Some imported succulents may arrive with "dormancy" colors or shapes. If your plant looks significantly different than expected, please message us for species-specific dormancy info.
