Product Details

Notes: Lifetime tetradrachms of Alexander the Great featuring a phallus are rare silver coins minted primarily in Amphipolis during his reign (c. 336–323 BC). While they feature the standard imagery of Heracles and Zeus, the phallus serves as a unique mint control mark or magistrate's symbol. In antiquity, this was not viewed as obscene but rather as an apotropaic symbol meant to ward off bad luck or as a nod to the fertility associated with the god Dionysus. Today, these "lifetime issues" are highly prized by collectors for their historical significance and unusual iconography Coin type: Greek Ruler: Alexander III (The Great) State, City: Amphipolis Coin: Silver Lifetime Tetradrachm Obverse: Anepigraphic - Head of Herakles Facing Right Wearing a Lion Skin Headdress Reverse: BASILEWS ALEXANDRO - Zeus Aëtophoros Seated Left on Throne, Holding Eagle & Sceptre; Phallic Herm at Left Mint: Amphipolis (325-323/2 BC) Wt./Size/Axis: 16.25g / 25mm / 3H References: Price 78 Troxell issue E2 A95013
