Product Details

2,150 years ago, the Roman Empire (Fabius Labeo) created this magic Denarius. There is so much information on this beautiful silver picture into ancient history! It depicts Jupiter, the king of the gods, driving a galloping quadriga (a four-horse chariot) to the right. He is shown holding a sceptre and reins in his left hand while hurling a thunderbolt with his right. Directly below the horses is a rostrum (ship's prow). This detail commemorates naval victories against Antiochus the Great of Syria achieved by an ancestor of the moneyer, Quintus Fabius Labeo. The inscription in the exergue (the bottom section) typically reads Q·FABI, identifying the moneyer. (67.213.5)
