Large Pre-Columbian Maya Pottery Urn Fragment – Guatemala Late Classic Period, ca. 600–900 CE A large and expressive pottery fragment from a Maya funerary urn or ceremonial vessel, depicting a stylized god face with prominent, rounded eyes and a strong, projecting nose. The bold modeling and exaggerated features are characteristic of Maya ceramic sculpture, where appliqué elements were used to create dynamic, multi-figural urn compositions. This fragment once formed part of a larger vessel, likely used in funerary or ritual contexts. The sculptural treatment emphasizes volume and presence, with a particularly striking gaze created by the raised eye forms. The surface shows natural wear, with earthen deposits and a stable vertical break through the face consistent with age and burial. Despite its fragmentary condition, the piece retains strong visual impact and clear cultural identity. Mounted on a custom metal display. Provenance: Ex Vogt Auction, TX; Ex Douglas Rhodenbaugh Estate
