Tang Dynasty Pottery Standing Figure – China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618–907 CE. Hollow-molded and hand-finished terracotta figure depicted standing in a rigid frontal pose with folded arms and an elongated cylindrical body. The figure features a stylized coiffure or headdress and retains traces of original white pigment around the face and neck. Extensive earthen and mineral burial accretions remain visible throughout the surface, particularly along the reverse and lower section, consistent with long-term burial. Figures of this type were created as funerary attendants for Tang Dynasty tombs, accompanying the deceased into the afterlife. The simplified sculptural form and strong abstract presence give the piece an almost modern aesthetic quality while retaining its ancient ceremonial character. Height: 10”. Provenance: Ex Zhu Owen Collection, NY.
