Product Details

English country teacups in romantic red transferware by W.R. Midwinter of Burslem. A pastoral scene wraps each cup - a courting couple, a hilltop castle tower and cottage, trees and drifting clouds - under a lush scrolling floral border inside the rim. Sold solo, no saucers. SPECS: approx. 2.75 in. tall x 3.5 in. diameter; about 3.6 oz each; red transferware on white earthenware; impressed MIDWINTER ENGLAND mark; pattern believed Rural England, the firm's beloved bucolic countryside design. HISTORY: W.R. Midwinter (Burslem, 1910-1987) was one of Staffordshire's great 20th-century potteries, later absorbed into the Wedgwood Group; red is rarer and more romantic than the common brown colorway. CONDITION: good vintage condition, strong color and glossy glaze, light age-appropriate wear - see photos.
