Up for sale is a genuine, historic United States Shield Nickel (5 Cents). Designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre, the Shield Nickel holds an important place in history as the very first 5-cent piece struck in a copper-nickel composition rather than silver. Obverse Design: Features a prominent Union Shield draped in a garland, topped with a cross, symbolizing strength and unity just after the American Civil War. It includes the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintage year. Reverse Design: Displays a large number "5" surrounded by a ring of 13 stars.Composition: 75% Copper, 25% Nickel. Specifications: Diameter of 20.5 mm, weight of 5.00 grams, with a smooth/plain edge. Historical Significance: Minted exclusively at the Philadelphia Mint between 1866 and 1883
