The story centers on 13-year-old Harley, who arrives in the care of Casey and her husband, Mike, under extraordinary circumstances. Harley has recently been sectioned under the Mental Health Act after a public suicide attempt; she was discovered climbing the railings of a footbridge over a busy motorway and was only saved by the intervention of a passing stranger. Following six weeks of acute psychiatric hospitalization, social services required a safe, short-term therapeutic environment for Harley while her family situation was assessed. Harley’s home life is deeply fractured: her mother, who struggles with both learning disabilities and addiction, felt unable to cope with her daughter’s needs. Furthermore, Harley’s older sister, Milly, had moved out of the family home over a year prior.
