While it looks like a freestanding candlestick at first glance, the top section is actually designed as a cradling "cup" made of stylized acanthus leaves. This cup was manufactured to securely hold a separate, large decorative element—most commonly a fairy lamp shade, a glass hurricane chimney, a crystal bowl, or an ornate gemstone globe.
